Back to School: Caring For Your Dog While You Are Away
As we gear up for the back-to-school season, it's important to remember that our furry friends may need some extra attention and care during this transition. Dogs are social creatures and can often feel lonely or anxious when their human companions are away for long periods. So, let's make sure we have a game plan in place to ensure our pups stay happy and healthy even when our family members are busy with school.
Set A Consistent Routine
Dogs thrive on routine, so it's crucial to establish a consistent schedule for them. Try to wake up, feed, walk, and play with your pup around the same time each day. This predictability helps them feel safe and secure.
If you have time before your schedule changes, make sure to transition to your new routine slowly, so that they can be more prepared when their schedules change.
Provide Mental Stimulation
Keeping your dog mentally stimulated while you're away is a great way to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. Consider investing in puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys that can keep your pup occupied and engaged throughout the day. If your dog is an aggressive chewer, you may want to consider getting a safe bone that they can chew on while you are away, so that they avoid ripping up anything else they may have access to.
Arrange for Interaction
Dogs are social animals and thrive on human interaction. If your schedule doesn't allow you to be with your furry friend all day, consider asking a family member, a friend, or a trusted dog-sitter to spend some time with them. Regular interaction can ease their separation anxiety and provide much-needed companionship.
If your days at school are long, consider hiring a professional dog walker to help you out. They can provide regular walks and even some company for your dog during those hectic school hours. It's a win-win situation that ensures your pup gets the exercise they need and a social interaction that can ease their loneliness.
Exercise Before You Go Out
Making time for a vigorous exercise session with your dog will be extremely beneficial for you and your pup before you head out for the day. A tired pup is less likely to engage in destructive behavior or suffer from separation anxiety. A good walk or playtime in the morning will also help them burn off some energy and ensure a calmer day ahead.
Designated Safe Space
Create a safe and comfortable space for your dog to retreat to while you're away. Whether it's a crate, a specific room, or a cozy corner, make sure it's equipped with their favorite bed, toys, water, and food. This designated area will provide a sense of security and a place for them to relax.
Puppies of the Week
These sweet pups from Presley & Jett have been so much fun to watch play this week. They both love to explore, and chomp up all the grass and leaves we have out in the yard. They both have such a spirit for adventure, are very confident and love to meet other people and puppies. We’re so excited to find them their forever homes.
